Tonight I decided to try out a local fish market and while I was there I happened upon the definition of the Hawaiian word Kina’ole hanging on the wall behind the counter. Which just goes to show you just never know where you are going to find wisdom and inspiration.
Kina’ole: Doing the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, in the right place, for the right individual, for the right reason, with the right feeling, the first time.
Kina’ole is sometimes interpreted as flawlessness. I read it and I thought I’ve never gotten better or simpler instructions for how to do a good job. Not to say that this is easy because surely each piece requires wisdom, self knowledge, and confidence.
I think this is a beautiful idea to sit with and so I wanted to share it with you and challenge you to find Kina’ole in your work, in your home, in your hobbies, or your passions. I think if we were a little more familiar with the idea we’d be more apt to say “no” this is not the “right” thing, way, time, place, individual, reason, or feeling the first time and we wouldn’t find ourselves having to do things over and over again to learn what Kina’ole sums up so nicely for us.
